The only way to recover from our spiritual losses is to return to the cause of them and make whatever necessary corrections required by the truth.
Lack of knowledge of the God is what has brought our problems. The rediscovery of the majesty of God will accomplish great things about solving these problems. It will be impossible for us to keep our moral practices sound, to keep our attitudes straight while our idea of God is erroneous or inadequate. If we want to bring back spiritual power to our lives, we must begin to think of God in a way that is closest to how he really is.
What comes to our minds when we think God is of utmost importance to us.
It is likely that history will indicate that no other people has risen to levels higher than their religion, and spiritual history of mankind will demonstrate that no religion has ever been greater than the concept of God they have. Worship is pure or low, depending on the place God has in the heart of the worshiper.
“What comes to mind when you think about God? ”
We could predict with certainty the spiritual future of that person. If we were able to know exactly what the most influential religious leaders today think about God , we could predict quite accurately the condition of the Church tomorrow.
That our idea of God be as close as possible to God’s true being is something of huge importance to us. Compared with our actual thoughts about Him, our declarations and creeds are of little importance. Our real idea of God could be buried under the debris of religious conventional notions, and perhaps will need a vigorous and intelligent search before being dug up and exposed as it is.
Only after a strong evidence of painful self-examination, we will be able to discover what we actually believe about God. Having a correct concept of God is essential not only for theology, but also for practical Christian life.
God is not like anything or anyone. God is more than what Jesus Christ manifested but not different than what He manifested.
We learn based on using what we already know to use as a bridge into that which is unknown. The mind is unable to suddenly burst beyond the familiar realm into what is foreign. Even the most vigorous and daring mind is unable to create something out of nothing, through a spontaneous act of the imagination.
The beings that inhabit the world of mythology and superstition are not pure fantasy creations but were created using actual models from creepy crawling creatures from the ground, air or sea and extending their actual forms beyond their normal boundaries, or mixing the forms of two or more of them, so as to produce something new. No matter how beautiful or grotesque they are, we can always identify its prototypes. They are similar to something we already know.
When the Spirit wants to get something that is beyond the scope of our knowledge, He tells us that this thing is like something we already know, taking care to put the description in words that will save us from literalism.
For example, when the prophet Ezekiel saw the heavens opened and saw visions of God, he found himself looking at something that he did not have a language with which to describe it. What he was watching was far different from anything he had seen before, so he relied on the language of likeness.
Ezekiel 1.4-9
4 Then I looked, and behold, whirlwind was coming out of the north, a great cloud with raging fire engulfing itself; and brightness was all around it and radiating out of its midst like the color of amber, out of the midst of the fire. 5 Also from within it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had the likeness of a man. 6 Each one had four faces, and each one had four wings. 7 Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the soles of calves’ feet. They sparkled like the color of burnished bronze. 8 The hands of a man were under their wings on their four sides; and each of the four had faces and wings. 9 Their wings touched one another. The creatures did not turn when they went, but each one went straight forward.
When we try to imagine what God is, by necessity we will use that which is not God as the raw material for
our mind to work on it, hence that, however we imagine God, He will not be, because we have built our
image of Him from that which He has done and what He has done is not God. If we insist on trying to imagine it, we end up with an idol, not made with hands, but with our thoughts, and an idol made in the mind is as offensive to God as an idol made with hands.
The desire to know what it is not possible to know, understand the Incomprehensible, touch and try the unreachable, the picture emerges God is in the nature of man. Deep calls to deep, and the soul although contaminated and tied to the disaster that theologians call the Fall, sighs to return to its source. God reveals himself, although He does not show himself to reason, but faith and love. Faith is the organ of knowledge, and love is the organ of experience. By faith and love we enter his presence to achieve it.
It is the clear doctrine of the Scriptures that God can be known. Our Lord teaches that eternal life consists in the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ, whom He hath sent. The Psalmist says, “In Judah is God known” (Ps 76. 1). Isaiah predicts, that “the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord” (Is 11. 9). Paul says even of the heathen, that they knew God, but did not like to retain that knowledge (Rom 1. 19, 20, 21, 28).
